Sanguine About Slowing

Sanguine: being optimistic, especially in an apparently difficult situation.

Peak growth is probably behind us. Earnings and GDP growth are unlikely to reach new heights this cycle, but does that mean the expansion is ending? No, not in our view. There have been many times in the past few decades, and even in this expansion, when economic growth has slowed materially without ending the economic cycle or equity bull market. The best example of a slowing but still growing economy may come from the mid-1990s. In 1994, the economy was growing robustly as the Federal Reserve tightened monetary policy. While U.S. economic growth slowed significantly in 1995, earnings grew and the U.S. equity market turned in a strong year. More recently, economic growth slowed materially in 2016, while stocks posted solid, albeit varied, returns. While we are positive on equities in general in this environment, our research shows that there are always areas of the economy and innovative companies that can grow irrespective of economic conditions. Those companies and industries are, and always have been, our focus.

The Russell 1000® Growth Index is an unmanaged index designed to measure the performance of the largest 1000 companies in the Russell 3000 Index with higher price-to-book ratios and higher forecasted growth values. The Russell 1000 Value Index measures the performance of those Russell 1000 companies with lower price-to-book ratios and lower forecasted growth values. The Russell 2000 Growth Index is an unmanaged index generally representative of common stocks designed to track performance of small-capitalization companies with greater than average growth orientation. The Russell 2000 Value Index is an unmanaged index generally representative of the small-cap value segment of the U.S. equity universe and measures the performance of Russell 2000 companies with lower price-to-book ratios and lower forecasted growth values. The Russell 3000® Growth Index is an unmanaged index designed to measure the performance of those Russell 3000® Index companies with higher price-to-book ratios and higher forecasted growth values. The Russell 3000 Value Index is an unmanaged index generally representative of stocks from the Russell 3000 Index with lower price-to-book ratios and lower expected growth rates. The MSCI ACWI Index (gross) is a free float-adjusted market capitalization weighted index that is designed to measure the equity market performance of developed and emerging markets. The MSCI ACWI consists of 45 country indices comprising 24 developed and 21 emerging market country indices. The MSCI ACWI ex USA Index (gross) captures large and mid cap representation across 23 of 24 Developed Markets (DM) countries excluding the US) and 23 Emerging Markets (EM) countries. The index covers approximately 85% of the global equity opportunity set outside the US.
